About 20 minutes by boat from Forodhani area lies Changuu, also known as Prison Island. This name is misleading; although the once impressive building, erected in 1893 by Lloyd Mathews under orders of the British administrators, was originally intended as a prison, it never housed criminals.

Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine area off north eastern Zanzibar near Matemwe, with excellent visibility depths ranging from 10 to 30 meters. It includes the small triangular island of Mnemba and a reef area of roughly 2 by 4 miles. This breathtaking marine ecosystem is famous for sightings of green turtles and dolphins that like to join you as you snorkel or dive; depending on the season, you may even spot migrating humpback whales, who announce their presence with an occasional spout of water. 

This is a great opportunity to get in touch with the daily village life and explore the northern part in a sportive way. You will cycle through  rural villages, from Nungwi to Fukuchani, visit the  dhow shipyard, try your hands at being a  blacksmith (local style)  and adventure through recently discovered stunning coral caves filled with stalagmite and stalactite crystal rocks, explore Portuguese ruins dating back to the 16th century, and swim in a tidal, clear water cave.

This snorkelling adventure starts in Kizimkazi, a traditional fishing village in the south of Zanzibar. From there you will embark on a 40-minute motorboat ride out to the beautiful Pungume Sandbank where you will snorkel at 2 different reefs. When you reach Pungume Sandbank, you can fully take advantage of the surroundings by swimming and snorkelling all around this gorgeous sandbar! Pungume Island is still preserved by tourism, so the coral reefs are in good health. We chose to work with a dive centre situated in the village of Kizimkazi, with a local team sensitive to the protection of the coral reefs. For example, they are careful not to drop the anchor of the boats on the corals during the snorkelling sessions. During the activity, it is possible to visit the sandbank of Pungume Island. Our special Jozani Forest & Pete Nature Explorer takes you truly off the beaten track! You will experience the day-to-day life in a Zanzibar village, learn about local customs and beliefs, and gain insights into the culture, traditions and cuisine.  We start with a guided morning walk through the forest, where you will learn about the island's different types of monkeys among other, often invisible species. Then, walk along a wooden trail through the mangroves; where you will see thousands of crabs going about their business during low tide. We will take you to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre near Jozani, and visit a voodoo cave. You will be served a tasty home-cooked lunch on the outskirts of Pete Village, a permaculture farm kept in harmony with nature.  To round up the day we escape with you on a "mtumbwi" through the mangroves of the Pete Inlet - a unique natural habitat, far away from crowds and noise.

We designed this signature tour to take you on a true Robinson Crusoe adventure, away from crowded beaches, to beautiful areas that are rarely seen by tourists! This tour is immensely dependent on tide and wind conditions! Leaving the beach in front of Mama Root we head north along the coral rock formated South Coast to our first stop at the deserted beach of Uzi Island where we venture with you through a long-forgotten coconut palm tree plantation into the mangroves where we might spot shy Red Colobus Monkeys that will be surprised about our visit. We won’t follow them for pictures, but will simply enjoy their presents in silence! Uzi Island is still quite untouched and most of the Uzis are fishermen and peasants. We don’t aim to interfere and stay away from the village. The island can only be reached by boat or at low tide when the only road to the island surfaces. 

Stand-up paddle boarding or SUP is currently considered to be the fastest-growing water sport in the world. We have tour options that can be enjoyed by adults and kids at all levels! All our tours start with a SUP lesson by one of your guides before you hit the water. Our aim is for you to feel comfortable and have the best experience out there. This special day will bring you close to real life in a Zanzibari fishing village. Its rhythms are still perfectly aligned with those of the sea and the seasons, and the small treasures of its beautiful beach provide a livelihood for many families. At low tide, you will walk out to the reef that shelters Zanzibar’s East Coast. You will learn about seaweed farming, how coconut rope is made, how fishermen catch octopus and shellfish and how the village children collect snails and bait. Strolling through the village, your guide will talk about life in this traditional community. If you are interested, you can visit the school and/or a local NGO. A refreshing swim afterwards and a tasty lunch at the beautiful Maalum Cave round off this experience.

Within three well-invested hours you will gain a good understanding of the fascinating history of Zanzibar’s capital city and its significant areas, buildings and historical sites. There are distinctive features of Arab and Indian urban architecture to discover at every turn, such as the famous Zanzibar doors, elaborately carved with ornaments and verses from the Q’ran (Arab) orplants and animals (Indian), decorated with brass studs, quaint balconies and verandas, small hidden gardens, saint’s graves, and much more. 

Jozani Forest is the last area of indigenous forest in Zanzibar and part of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. It is home to the endemic Kirk’s Red Colobus monkeys, one of Africa’s rarest primates, and many other species of animals and plants. The reserve consists of groundwater forest, coastal forest, grassland, mangroves and salt marsh. It has excellent nature trails, and our guides are well-trained and informative. Your tour includes a visit to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre. This community project protects endangered species of butterflies, educates both local people and visitors, and provides income for villagers. Set in 5000 sq/ft of beautiful gardens, it offers the opportunity to see butterflies very close (they might even settle on your hand!), to feed them and to learn all about their fascinating life cycle. The income of the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is channelled back into various local projects forconservation and poverty alleviation.
