Our special Jozani Forest & Pete Nature Explorer takes you truly off the beaten track! You will experience the day-to-day life in a Zanzibar village, learn about local customs and beliefs, and gain insights into the culture, traditions and cuisine. We start with a guided morning walk through the forest, where you will learn about the island's different types of monkeys among other, often invisible species. Then, walk along a wooden trail through the mangroves; where you will see thousands of crabs going about their business during low tide. We will take you to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre near Jozani, and visit a voodoo cave. You will be served a tasty home-cooked lunch on the outskirts of Pete Village, a permaculture farm kept in harmony with nature. To round up the day we escape with you on a "mtumbwi" through the mangroves of the Pete Inlet - a unique natural habitat, far away from crowds and noise.
"Mtumbwi" is the most basic of traditional boats found along The Swahili Coast. It is a simple dugout canoe, generally carved from a large coastal tree such as a mango tree. These canoes vary in size, generally 2 to 3 metres, and rarely up to 6 metres in length. They are used to move between shore and larger vessels at anchor. Mtumbwis are usually propelled by a small wooden paddle (kafi) or punting pole.
Starts at 7.00 am from Stone Town / ends around 4 pm or later. Including a private guide throughout the day, entrance fees at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park and Butterfly Center, coral cave visit, Ukili women's' workshop visit, typical Swahili lunch (different from our spice plantation lunch) with fruits and non-alcoholic drinks, canoeing in the mangroves of Pete inlet & 12% VAT.
