NUNGWI VILLAGE CYCLING TOURšHalf Day ā¶ļø $45
Nungwi Kaskazini A Unguja North Region
See route
This is a great opportunity to get in touch with the daily village life and explore the northern part in a sportive way. You will cycle through rural villages, from Nungwi to Fukuchani, visit the dhow shipyard, try your hands at being a blacksmith (local style) and adventure through recently discovered stunning coral caves filled with stalagmite and stalactite crystal rocks, explore Portuguese ruins dating back to the 16th century, and swim in a tidal, clear water cave.
If you have ever wondered how the lovely photogenic dhows (traditional wooden sailing boats) are being built, you have come to the right place. Nungwiās dhow builders are famous for their craft, and you can watch them at work not far from the ocean. You will see dhows in all phases of their construction and learn about the whole process, from the sourcing of the wood, and the joints used, to the rituals of launching a new dhow. We suggest either starting the tour with a Nungwi Turtle Aquarium visit or ending the tour with the Fukuchani Natural Turtle Aquarium visit - a village initiative that provides shelter and protection to chameleons, butterflies, turtles and fish. The Nungwi and Fukuchani aquarium itself is a natural pool carved out from the coral bedrock by the erosion of millions of waves crashing against the shore. The water rises and falls with the tides, providing a natural environment for its inhabitants.
Starts earliest at 9 a.m. and latest at 2 p.m. (tour duration approx. 3 to 4 hours. Including a private guide, mountain bike, helmet, drinking water, seasonal fruits, and all entrance fees (except for the Turtle Aquarium in Nungwi or Fukuchani) and 12% VAT.
