Spend a day cycling in Zanzibar, and it will be hard not to feel like you have discovered some kind of secret! With the warm wind in your hair, groups of excited children yelling “Jambo!” or “howah-yoouu” after you, and the exhilaration of making your own way, it is truly the best way to get to know a place. This tour takes you through the outskirts of Stone Town into the Masingini Forest to the highest point of Zanzibar, where you will have a spectacular view of the town and the ocean. Stop there at our preferred spice plantation for a unique Spice Tour with a locally cooked Zanzibar lunch. Passing through the countryside on your bicycle will bring you in close contact with nature and village life, and you will see and experience much more of your surroundings than from a car window. The tour requires a medium fitness level. There are ascents, but they are less challenging than most you’ll find in Europe. You would have to manage 30 km of cycling in total (15 km per way).
Please be aware that this tour is weather dependent and not suitable during or after heavy rain.
Starts usually at 9 am from Stone Town.
Including mountain bike and helmet rental, private guide throughout the day, 1-litre drinking water per person a typical Swahili lunch in a private, rural ambience, nonalcoholic beverages, seasonal fruits, optional stopover at Kidichi Persian Baths (ruins), as well as 12% VAT.
BE WELL PREPARED
Please note that road traffic here in Zanzibar has increased dramatically in recent years! There are 20 minutes of cycling through wild traffic which we cannot avoid and for which you need to have a calm, focused mind and strong nerves. If you like, you can also visit the Masingini Forest Nature Reserve. There are plenty of monkeys (red and black colobus), and different tree species and it’s a paradise for those who are into birding. We have spotted the malachite kingfisher, the forest weaver, the Madagascar squacco heron, the little bulbul, the olive sunbird and many others so don’t forget to take your binoculars! The entrance fee to the reserve (US$ 10 per person) is not included in the above mentioned pricing.
